Originally from Castleton, NY, Christian Mitchell moved to New York City in 1990 to attend The Fashion Institue of Technololgy where he studied Fine Arts and Display and Exhibit Design. More inclined to stay out all night and dance than go to classes, Christian became inspired by the club scene of New York.

His love of photography started when he found an old camera in the basement of his home at six years old and became fascinated.  Christian's father bought a role of film and taught him the basics.  He later became obsessed with Polaroid film because of its instant gratification. After learning black and white processing he soon enrolled in several other art classes (favorites being print-making and collage).

After graduating FIT, Christian MItchell found himself working in a display studio and not feeling very inspired.  "I was spending more time in the clubs than at work…In fact I was barely  ever thinking about work".  That’s when his makeup career started.  Christian was buying personal makeup at MAC Cosmetics… a small boutique on the corner of Christopher and Gay St.  He started talking to the artists there who encouraged him to apply as a makeup artist.  With no professional experience, he relied on his interest to learn and enthusias about the brand. Christian was hired a few weeks later.

While working there, Christian continued experimenting with his own art including makeup, photography, painting and screen-printing, always trying to develop himself further as a Fine Artist. "Creating things has always been my passion".

Christian Mitchell has worked in the fashion industry for nearly 20 years. In various roles, he has had the pleasure of working with some of the best talents in the industry- many have become personal friends that continue to inspire.  "One of my most exciting projects was working with Kembre Pfahler from Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black.  I had been a fan for ten years and then I got to work with her personally on a MAC Party.  It was one of the highlights of my career" says Mitchell.  Working with Topolino was another great experience for him. "...such a creative mind and shares my love of clowns!  After working with him, I saw makeup artistry completely differently".  Christian says that he has been inspired by a plethora of other artists that he has worked with at MAC- too many to name.

Christian Mitchell currently resides in the East Village of New York City. He published a limited edition book titled MENTAL CIRCUS in October 2011 and plans to show the work again in the near future.
